This dance smells. We told you it would. If you think this dance stinks, well maybe that’s the point. The movement in this dance was conjured by scents. Scents conjure memories. Memories FADE. This dance casts a spell to create memories: when you smell the smells you smelled tonight in the future, remember us. As smell transported us into memories and into motion, I am curious how smell will affect your experience of this dance. Will the smell of coffee, toast, or popcorn in the future transport you to a memory of our dance? Many thanks to the dancers and the designers for their openness to this olfactory experiment.

The culture of flamenco originated from the Romani/gitano people who settled in the Andalucía region of southern Spain. Thanks to university support, last semester I traveled to Spain to study in a flamenco and language school for a month. My brief study merely scratched the surface of flamenco’s complex forms and fusions of cultural traditions. While still very much a beginner, I am inspired to share some of what I learned, and to continue learning, with ASU students. As beginners we do not presume to represent flamenco, but rather wish to share explorations of elements and inspired impressions. I am grateful to the dancers for their openness and commitment to try something new with me. We are deeply appreciative of guitarist/collaborator Savas Altuntas for sharing his talent, adaptability and knowledge of flamenco music with us. - Emily Daughtridge
